Flow-control behaviour and Cached lines timestamping, plus a suspend error in 2.1beta1
by Behal, Pavel 05 Jun '08

05 Jun '08

Dear Bazsi, I have found two "features" and one bug I would like to discuss a little: 1) We use the syslog-ng 2.1alpha1 as a root system syslog. The problem is, we have had two destinations setup. First destination was the traditional write of system messages to the file like "/var/log/messages" etc. The second destination path was to the TCP stream to the central syslog server. And the problem is, we have used the flow-control flag on the central TCP path. But, when the central TCP syslog-ng becomes unavailable, after all the buffers filled up, the local system syslog-ng stopped processing any system messages. It did not write anything through the local file destinations until the TCP communication was re-established. Is this a correct behaviour? We have found, that to allow smooth processing of local system sources, we can not use flow-control flag on any destination paths it used.. 2) When messages are in syslog-ng buffer, they do not contain any timestamp. We have realized, that the timestamp is added at the time the syslog-ng flushes all the buffers to the disk. This is not very good in case you need to debug the messages ages and all of them have same and non-related timestamp. Is it possible to modify the logic of syslog-ng to timestamp the messages as soon as possible - even before the buffer, at the collection time? We have found it important for log integrity reasons. 3) Directly in the 2.1beta1 there has been introduced some error with the "suspend writing a destination file when an I/O error ..." patch. During our tests we have found it continously thinks the destination is unavailable and writes strange messages into to the internal log: May 29 15:00:02 europa syslog-ng[16798]: I/O error occurred while writing; fd='7', error='Connection timed out (110)' May 29 15:00:02 europa syslog-ng[16798]: Connection broken; time_reopen='60' May 29 15:00:02 europa syslog-ng[16798]: Suspending write operation because of an I/O error; fd='7', time_reopen='60' the lsof -p 16798: COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME syslog-ng 16798 root cwd DIR 253,0 4096 2 / syslog-ng 16798 root rtd DIR 253,0 4096 2 / syslog-ng 16798 root txt REG 253,0 114584 671841 /sbin/syslog-ng syslog-ng 16798 root mem REG 253,0 106397 820372 /lib/ld-2.3.4.so syslog-ng 16798 root mem REG 253,0 1454546 820373 /lib/tls/libc-2.3.4.so syslog-ng 16798 root mem REG 253,0 28504 2919694 /usr/lib/libwrap.so.0.7.6 syslog-ng 16798 root mem REG 253,0 93985 820376 /lib/tls/libpthread-2.3.4.so syslog-ng 16798 root mem REG 253,0 47671 820386 /lib/tls/librt-2.3.4.so syslog-ng 16798 root mem REG 253,0 505200 2930064 /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0.400.7 syslog-ng 16798 root mem REG 253,0 95148 820384 /lib/libnsl-2.3.4.so syslog-ng 16798 root mem REG 253,0 36639 2920956 /usr/local/lib/libevtlog.so.0.0.0 syslog-ng 16798 root 0r CHR 1,3 1619 /dev/null syslog-ng 16798 root 1w CHR 1,3 1619 /dev/null syslog-ng 16798 root 2w CHR 1,3 1619 /dev/null syslog-ng 16798 root 3r REG 0,3 0 4026531850 /proc/kmsg syslog-ng 16798 root 4u unix 0xc1be7ba0 351802 /dev/log syslog-ng 16798 root 5u IPv4 351804 TCP europa.training.hp.com:37205->europa.training.hp.com:5140 (ESTABLISHED) syslog-ng 16798 root 6w REG 253,0 4802 1655155 /var/log/messages syslog-ng 16798 root 8w REG 253,0 525 1655159 /var/log/boot.log This happens during standard system syslog processing on RH ELinux 4 and Solaris 9. Re: [syslog-ng] file() sourcing application logs

We are doing something similar; we use tomcat and apache. For apache, something like this (we are using 2.0): CustomLog "|/usr/bin/logger -p local1.info -t apache-access " access-format Then on syslog-ng I use the "tag" to point it to the right log file. For tomcat, that is tougher; stack dumps are a curse to syslog. There is a hook in the Catalina startup scripts to create a named pipe for gc.out and tomcat.out. The it spawns a logger -p local2.info < gc.out-named-pipe thingy to send to syslog-ng. I can send more details if you need them. file() sourcing application logs
by Chris Pratt 04 Jun '08

Hi syslog-ng, Been all over google and still not found what I need so I'm hoping to get some help here... I have syslog-ng capturing and duplicating all of my *normal* /var/logs. I still need to capture some application specific logs that are not using syslog at all currently but dumping to text in application log directories. I wanted to use the file() source but I am not getting the results I wanted. I have tried both of these options to get these files logged: # See http://www.syslog.org/syslog-ng/v2/#id2535001 # tail -f [file log] | logger -p local#.info # # See http://www.balabit.com/dl/html/syslog-ng-admin-guide_en.html/ch09s01.html # source s_tail { file("/var/log/apache/access.log" follow_freq(1) flags(no-parse)); }; but I am running into two issues: 1.) Either above way of sourcing the files results in each line in my application log showing up as a separate syslog event even though it is a single application event that wraps lines in its own application log. For example: {Heap before GC invocations=1087 (full 0): par new generation total 307200K, used 219907K [0x5af10000, 0x73f10000, 0x73f10000) eden space 204800K, 100% used [0x5af10000, 0x67710000, 0x67710000) from space 102400K, 14% used [0x6db10000, 0x6e9d0d38, 0x73f10000) to space 102400K, 0% used [0x67710000, 0x67710000, 0x6db10000) concurrent mark-sweep generation total 991232K, used 116200K [0x73f10000, 0xb0710000, 0xb0710000) concurrent-mark-sweep perm gen total 71680K, used 46017K [0xb0710000, 0xb4d10000, 0xb4d10000) 27877.615: [GC 27877.615: [ParNew Desired survivor size 94371840 bytes, new threshold 15 (max 15) - I also have a couple of log files that use the date in their name but from what I can tell macros only work with destinations, not sources? I'd like to do something like: #source s_tomcat { file("/usr/local/server/apache-tomcat-5.5.20/logs/tomcat.${YEAR}-${MONTH}-${DAY}.log"); }; to accommodate this. Anyone have any similar app log setup and a solution to these issues? TIA, Chris

Source optional() option causes syntax error
by Clay Loveless 04 Jun '08

04 Jun '08

Reposting in its own thread: I'm using a pipe source, and would like to make it optional, however the optional(yes) parameter seems to be considered a syntax error. Here's the entry: source test { pipe("/tmp/test_fifo" optional(yes) flags(no-parse) log_msg_size(1024)); }; Am I doing this incorrectly? This line is considered a syntax error by syslog-ng 2.0.9. -Clay -- Killersoft.com

I ran into a similar issue with Netcool from syslog-ng, thinking the microsecond portion of the message was the hostname. What we found out is that there is a bug in the WCs. If you upgrade your WCs, you will see the hostnames coming in with your syslog messages (which you don't currently get, hence why your system is not working as expected). Hope that helps!! Hi, When I have the following in syslog-ng.conf: filter f_cyrus { level(warn, err, crit) and facility(local6); }; destination cyrus { file("/var/log/cyrus.log"); }; log { source(src); filter(f_cyrus); destination(cyrus); }; nothing is being logged in /var/log/cyrus.log however when I use: filter f_cyrus { level(warn, err, crit) and match("imap"); }; it works fine, why is local6 not working?? (cyrus-imap is default compiled with local6 enabled) Running on Suse 10.0 ( Cannot upgrade yet :-( ) with syslog-ng version 1.6.8 Greetings, Ruud Feringa.

syslog-ng to trigger rancid
by Mladen Tsvetkov 04 Jun '08

04 Jun '08

Hi, Guys, I am new to syslog-ng. I have successfully installed it and integrated with mysql and php. My question is how can I make syslog-ng to start rancid when a syslog configuration message is received from a cisco device: 112578: 1564643: May 15 09:05:19.141 EEST: %SYS-5-CONFIG_I: Configured from console by ******** on vty0 (10.10.10.10). So far I know that I have to use the program() directive. But how can I pass the hostname and other parameters to rancid? Thanks in advance, Longman

Hello everyone, I am currently workin on setting up a debian box as a central syslog server. One goal of this server is to filter syslog messages into different folders based on what server they were sent by. This works as expected with all devices EXCEPT for my cisco wireless controllers. When they log:
Jun 02 20:52:29.063 1x_auth_pae.c:2488 DOT1X-3-MAX_EAP_RETRIES: Max EAP identity request retries (21) exceeded for client 00:19:d2:78:ee:8f Jun 02 20:52:09.663 1x_auth_pae.c:2488 DOT1X-3-MAX_EAP_RETRIES: Max EAP identity request retries (21) exceeded for client 00:13:e8:d9:9d:eb Jun 02 20:50:49.064 1x_auth_pae.c:2488 DOT1X-3-MAX_EAP_RETRIES: Max EAP identity request retries (21) exceeded for client 00:19:d2:78:ee:8f
My syslog-ng, rather than filtering these into a folder given by the wireless controllers ip/hostname, creates folders named .063 and .064. It seems like syslog-ng is reading the microsecond portion of the timestamp as the hostname! After sniffing some other syslog messages, I noticed that ONLY these cisco devices have timestamps that include microseconds. Does anyone have any idea how to work around this and filter the cisco messages by hostname? Someway to truncate the timestamp or force it to look further to find the actual hostname? Just FYI I will post the relevant portion of my syslog-ng.conf:
source remote_src { udp(); tcp(); }; destination remote_syslog { file( "/usr/local/syslog/$HOST/$YEAR/$MONTH/$YEAR-$MONTH-$DAY.log" owner(root) group(root) perm(0644) dir_perm(0755) create_dirs(yes) ); }; ### added 4-16-08 all three wireless controllers destinations ### manually creating directory names destination wir-c-syd-3-00 { file( "/usr/local/syslog/wir-c-syd-3-00/$YEAR/$MONTH/$YEAR-$MONTH-$DAY.log" owner(root) group(root) perm(0644) dir_perm(0755) create_dirs(yes) ); }; filter wir-c-syd-3-00 { netmask(172.25.198.10/32); }; log { source(remote_src); filter(wir-c-syd-3-00); destination(wir-c-syd-3-00); };
Hi Bazsi, Thanks for the feedback. I'll re-submit a new patch shortly. Is the organisational agreement Anthony mentioned good enough (and current?) for you.
