problems building 1.5.18 on solaris

Hello List, I tried to install/compile syslog-ng vers. 15.18 on to my RH 7.3 System. My System is using glibc vers. 2.5.5 While compiling a lot of errors occurred, so I could not run syslog-ng. Is syslog-ng vers. 15.18 not compatible with RH 7.3 and libc vers. 2.5.5? Does any body has any answer for that question? It is my intention to setup an win-nt40-eventlog-messages collecting linux server which keeps all NT-Eventlog from my network send by EventReporter. I just want to use the enhanced features of syslog-ng for that project. Thanx for helping in advance Kai

Syslog-ng makes my server crash.

Hi all, Some quite strange things have happened in my network since i set up my syslog-ng as a log centralizer... Actually, when launched, my syslog-ng ends up to grab all resources of the machine on which it's installed. Then, no way to ssh to it... It's really strange cause normally, syslog-ng should use only very few resources... like syslog ! Whereas with syslog, everything goes well.. Don't know what's happening. What's the diffrence in internal() between 1.5.15 and 1.5.18

Hi Batzi, we switched from 1.5.15 to 1.5.18 and observed the following difference in handling logging 'STATS' and daemon start/stop to the internal() source: 1.5.15: works fine for us. STATS and daemon start/stop are logged to a file attached to internal() 1.5.18: seems nothing is logged to internal(). Where are we wrong. We don't changed the config file. Hello, When a message contains 2 chunks (or more) separated by '\n', next message losts its facility.level because it contains end of previous log. Some missunderstanding in filter

Dear sirs. I'm newbie in syslog-ng therefore I beg you to treat my question with indulgence if it is primitive. I'm very sorry for an attached conf but I think I can't explain my problem without this. I have linux (RH) box with syslog-ng-1.4.10 (it's some outdated package but I haven't enough knowledge for its rebuilding). My problem is following: the log from MTA comes to /var/log/messages. So I have duplicate MTA log in mail.log and messages. As far as I understand the problem point is in following filters: > filter f_messages { level(info, emerg, debug, notice, warn, crit, err); }; >log { source(src); filter(f_messages); destination(messages); }; There was an attempt to "log anything (except mail) of level info or higher". But mail is logging to /var/log/messages anyway. How should I modify the filters for resolving this? Hi, I am playing with syslog-ng, it seems that config log{ source(src); filter(filterA); filter(filterB); destination(dest); } means log those messages which satisfy both filterA and filterB to dest, am I right? now the question is if i want log messages satisfy filterA or filterB to dest, how should I write the config? Balazs, On both hosts the DNS lookup and reverse lookup are working fine: Name: nexus1.webnet.qc.ca Address: 209.71.224.10 And reverse: 10.224.71.209.in-addr.arpa name = nexus1.webnet.qc.ca. Also, I added the line: 209.71.224.10 nexus1.webnet.qc.ca nexus1 to /etc/hosts on both hosts. I did try to sniff the traffic using tcpdump, I used "sniff" to translate the output from hex to ascii. However, the messages were fine but the hostname was not translated properly, it was still hex codes. You know a tool I could use to reliably sniff and translate syslog traffic? BUG: Number in Hostnames?

Hi, I've been toying a bit with syslog-ng, I'm quite happy so far with all the possibilities it offer me. But I got a problem getting it to work in my environment. I want to log normal syslogd machines to a LogHost which would run syslog-ng. I've installed syslog-ng 1.5.18 on my LogHost and ran a few tests. With this config: options { sync (0); time_reopen (10); log_fifo_size (1000); long_hostnames (no); chain_hostnames (no); use_dns (no); use_fqdn (no); create_dirs (no); keep_hostname (yes); }; source s_sys { unix-stream ("/dev/log"); internal(); udp (ip(209.71.224.21) port (514)); }; destination mail1 { file("/var/log/mail1"); }; filter filter_mail1 { host("mail1");}; log { source(s_sys); filter(filter_mail1); destination(mail1); }; As you can see, I want to log a host named "mail1" to a file "mail1". However, it doesn't work. The host send its log entries syslog-ng but doesn't recognize "mail1". But, if I change the host("mail1") to host("mail"), it work perfectly. The hostname in the /var/log/mail1 file is "mail" tho, not "mail1". I ran syslogd into debug mode on my "mail1" machine. I saw it does send the logs out with the "mail1" tag. I tried this with another of my host, its name is nexus1, I experienced the same behavior. So, I'm wondering if syslog-ng doesn't like having a number at the end of the hostname. Error when compiling with tcp-wrappers

When I compile with the option --enable-tcp-wrapper, I get the following error. afinet.o: In function `do_open_afinet_connection': afinet.o(.text+0x38b): undefined reference to `request_init' afinet.o(.text+0x394): undefined reference to `sock_host' afinet.o(.text+0x39c): undefined reference to `hosts_access' collect2: ld returned 1 exit status I have enclosed the error.log and a copy of the makefile. Any ideas??

I'm using syslog-ng over stunnel to log to a remote mysql database. I have it working perfectly on all my linux machines, but when I attempt to go over to Solaris, I run into problems. The $HOST value is the FQDN as defined in in DNS reverse lookup. However if I have syslog-ng on a remote box and it uses a TCP connection to my central syslog receiver then the hostname is missing the domain? I have lots of servers named "dns1" or "www" so this becomes a problem. Am I missing an option somewhere? Thanks, -Ben.

Square Brackets in match()

Syslog-ng: 1.5.18 and 1.4.11 If I have a message that looks like this: Jun 3 00:16:52 X.X.X.X/X.X.X.X rido-ott[System]: request for unserviced tcp:X.X.X.X-25 from X.X.X.X denied if I want to match this part [System]: request for unserviced I have to leave out the leading '['. eg match("[System]: request for unserviced") will not but match("System]: request for unserviced") will Is this a bug in the matching grammar? Strange behaviour in syslog-ng file creation.

Hi all. First, I'm sorry: I'm afraid my english is very poor. :-| Actually we run a medium log server, with a dozen of host logging on it via tcp. syslog-ng is 1.4.15, OS is Linux RedHat 7.2. We find some trouble in file creation: we want syslog-ng create files with an user, a group and a bitmask, but it fail in bitmap setting for some files and do it successfuly for other files. If I perform a chown on directory /var/log/bayonne/avvenire/, it works, but if I perform a manual chmod on all files in this directory it *temporary* work, but permission are changhed at first a log line is appended in every file. I only covered a couple hundred of the seven hundred or so messages, so I'll likely end up with more content. Problems compiling 1.5.18

This problem was reported (with a workaround) by Andrej.Borsenkow(a)mow.siemens.ru on Thu May 30th. The fix was to add the line #include "stdio.h" to cfg-grammer.c I don't know if this is the right thing to do because there is conflicting advice Bazsi said it would be save to include it, but in the cfg-grammer.c file there is a comment saying: # include <stdio.h> /* INFRINGES ON USER NAME SPACE */ I just wanted to remind the (kind & generous) programmers of this issue for those of us who are not C programmers so that the "proper" fix for this doesn't get forgotten in the next version release. On RedHat 7.3 with latest patches. Doing a regex substitution in syslog-ng

Hey guys, I'm trying to make a syslog-ng solution to recieve logs from some custom java apps that output syslog data, but I have an issue. Our programmers have already defined a format for their messages, and our log parsers expect this format. I can pass the data around syslog systems, but at the destination file, I need to strip off the syslog headers to leave me with the raw message that was came out of the ajva app. I was hoping that I could do something akin to a filter that did a regex substitution to modify the message to make it look pretty. Is this possible, and if not, is there any other way of pulling this off? Thanks Donavan Pantke

sync option not flushing on TERM?

Here are my system stats: Linux 2.4.7-10 i686 ext3 filesystem syslog-ng 1.4.11 I'm trying to do some stress testing of our syslog-ng configuration on a server for log collection and if I send 50 msg/s I find that a bunch are not ending up in the destination file. Where I should I be looking for these dropped messages? It's not the interface I was able to get this machine to accept 1200 msg/s with syslog-ng doing no filtering and writing to a fifo (with a script I wrote sucking messages though the pipe) plus /sbin/ifconfig tells me that things are ok. In our investgation we decided to try the sync option to see if improved the situation where messages were dropped (this is happening with 100 test messages and a log_fifo_size(10000) ). We discovered that the remainder of messages left in the buffer were not flushed to the destination when syslog-ng was TERMed. Looking at the change logs from 1.4.11 to 1.4.15 I don't see a fix mentioned there. Any ideas? Clayton Scott

Feature request: (I know you get lots of these from me, sorry Baszi ;) Can output from programs started by syslog-ng get logged by syslog-ng to the logs, perhaps under the syslog facility with the program name as the TAG field: Jun 5 12:15:04 hostname swatch[15895]: syntax error at /root/.swatch_script.1395 line 1581, near "." Or use syslog-ng as the TAG and put the actual program just after: Jun 5 12:15:04 hostname syslog-ng[15892]: swatch: syntax error at /root/.swatch_script.1395 line 1581, near "." I have a separate log architecture I setup for our networking devices, and the network engineers maintain it. The problem is that they didn't know swatch wasn't running due to swatch errors, and swatch is started from syslog-ng (as described here: http://www.campin.net/newlogcheck.html#swatch) Having the swatch errors caught and logged would even have allowed me to send an alert on it via some filters using "match()", or at least been easy for the network staff to see in the logs. They're good with ciscos but not as good with UNIX ;) -- Linux is like an indian's tent: No gates, no windows, and apache inside.
