Hi I installed syslog-ng 1.5.24 on Red Hat Linux 7.3 and 8.0 and discovered that it doesn't work together with minilogd. For a description of minilogd please see: <http://www.cygnus.com/support/wpapers/redhat/initscripts/what.html>. Minilogd terminates if syslog-ng is started like expected, but the messages buffered by minilogd are lost. Any idea what's the cause and how to fix it? Daniel

I'm running swatch 3.0.4 from syslog-ng with a destination configuration like this: - - - syslog-ng.conf destination d_swatch { program("/usr/bin/swatch --config-file=/etc/swatchrc.alerts --read-pipe=\"cat /dev/fd/0\" "); }; - - - However, I don't like running swatch as root. Error connecting to log server

I have a set of Mandrake 9.0 boxes all running the latest version of syslog-ng (1.5.24). I have a centralized log server that is receiving logs from a variety of udp and tcp (syslog-ng) sources. All but one of the devices is able to log to the log server. The error that I get from that one server is: Error connecting to remote host AF_INET(10.1.1.1:5100), reattempting in 10 seconds Now I know that packet is getting there because I can look at an ACL from a router that sits between them: Dec 21 22:25:16 router1/router1 1553: Dec 21 22:28:09.816 pst: %SEC-6-IPACCESSLOGP: list 100 permitted tcp 10.1.1.1(32830) (FastEthernet1/0 0030.4841.12a4) -> 10.2.1.1(5100), 1 packet This same log server is also successfully receiving tcp logs from other syslog-ng servers without a problem and one of these is on the same subnet as the one that is having the problem connecting. The interesting thing is that even with using 514/udp the traffic does not seem to get to the log server. If I revert back to the standard syslog daemon, life is well again. Richard

I am trying to install syslog-ng on Mac OS X. I am using version 1.5.24 of syslog-ng and libol 0.3.6 with autoconf 2.5. After installing libol, I configured syslog with no apparent difficulties. This sounds similar to the problems with the configure script in ucd-snmp-4.2.3 finding tcp_wrappers on Linux/Solaris... there was a patch posted which I believe fixed 4.2.4 and above.... Maybe a compare of the way the ucd-snmp configure and syslog-ng configure finds tcp_wrappers might provide a clue? Problems getting tcp wrappers to work in Solaris

hi, I am running out of ideas how to get syslog-ng to work properly with tcp wrappers. For hosts.deny: ALL: PARANOID ALL: ALL For hosts.allow: syslogng : 1.2.3.4 syslog-ng : 1.2.3.4 I have not been successful getting syslog-ng to refuse logging data from other hosts in my test lab. Can someone pass along the format required for properly implementing tcp wrappers for syslog-ng? Thanks, Jason

BSD compatibility issue.

I just need to state that I've NOT tested this on Linux, but since I have not seen any complaints, I'm assuming this is strictly BSD-related. This is something I've been wondering for awhile... Maybe you guys can help me out. As reported[1] by Ed Ravin, there is a issue when using Syslog-NG 1.5.x over NetBSD systems. As an OpenBSD user, and I'm going through the same problem as he did. I've asked him for help, and he was kind enough to teach me (thanks!) a trick / workaround, which basically is, to forward kernel messages with the default Syslog to Syslog-NG. This solution works fine, but I've some servers that I'm stuck with Syslog-NG 1.4.xx, just because I can't afford a single extra process. My question is: have Syslog-NG definitively abandoned BSD compatibility? Is this a known issue by it's developers? If it is, there's a plan to get it fixed? syslog-ng 1.5.24 has been released

Hi, The latest version of syslog-ng has been released. Mostly cosmetic updates, I'd welcome success/failure reports on different platforms. I built it on Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 and Solaris 8, both build process went fine. The new release is available at: http://www.balabit.hu/en/downloads/syslog-ng/ Please note that you will need a new libol version (0.3.6). If no show-stopper bug is unveiled, syslog-ng 1.6 will be released. Problems compiling on Solaris 2.6

I'm having issues compiling syslog-ng-1.5.23 on Sparc Solaris 2.6 (yes, I know we should upgrade at some point). It looks like the resolv library on solaris 2.6 doesn't have a macro that syslog-ng is expecting. The resolv.h file contained a version reference line in the #pragma: #pragma ident "@(#)resolv.h 1.12 96/09/12 SMI" It looks to be a file from BIND 4.9.4. There was no #define MAXDNAME in /usr/include/resolv.h, but there were these MAXD* defines: #define MAXDFLSRCH 3 /* # default domain levels to try */ #define MAXDNSRCH 6 /* max # domains in search path */ I find it very strange that the MAXDNAME macro is not there. Is it possible that the file's been corrupted? I installed autoconf version 2.50 for OS X. The default installed version of automake is 1.6.2. From the libol directory, I then attempted to rebuild the ./configure scripts with "autoheader && automake --add- missing && autoconf", but I got an error with autoheader: autoheader: No template for symbol 'DEBUB_ALLOC' autoheader: No template for sysmbol 'HAVE_ATTRIBUTE' I am new to compiling gnu programs, so I am learning this as I go. I'm going to take some time to read the autoconf and automake manuals on gnu.org. Anybody have anymore suggestions? Thanks for all of your help so far. different time settings in affile.c

I've been looking through affile.c to see what macros are defined, and i've found 3 different sets of date macros. DATE, FULLDATE et.al which i assume is the date in the syslog message R_DATE, R_FULLDATE et. al which i assume (correctly?) is the reception date by the server. but what are S_DATE etc?
