Well, as I've said, time handling is one of the few big mysteries of
Unix to me; so I'm not sure if the approach the httpd source is taking
is sound, but judging from its geographical widespread it might be.

Ahh, that's unfortunately perl related and most definitely not shipped
with SunOS 5.8 either.

So we could indeed use the suggestion of the Solaris 8 man page ;). I
hope I can spare some minutes to look at this problem since we have a
strategic product based on syslog-ng as well, which is among other OS
also developed and packaged for Solaris (SunOS 5.6 - 5.10).
