Dear syslog-ng users,
Syslog-ng as a free software has been a tremendous success. It's been in wide use for almost four years now as the first release was made back in 1998.
As syslog-ng is a free software product it is very difficult to estimate the number of users of syslog-ng. Nevertheless we had over 40000 downloads in six months, and we have over 500 subscribers on our mailing list. These numbers are not exact either as syslog-ng is included in several GNU/Linux distributions like Debian.
According to the Debian package popularity contest (12th May 2002) syslog-ng was used on 3% of all Debian boxes (based on 1587 submissions).
To support the continous development of syslog-ng we plan to create a commercial branch, and add related services to our portfolio (consulting, training and support).
Please help us to improve syslog-ng and related services, and fill the enclosed survey and send it back to syslog-ng-survey@balabit.hu.

I would suggest using the "Reply-To:" field for this purpose. I notice, however, that the email list is munging the "Reply-To" already to point to this list. Here we see a perfect demonstration as to why listserver "Reply-To" munging is a Bad Thing(tm). ;-) It prevents you from making good use of it for purposes like these. Oh well. ;-) -- Chad Walstrom <chewie@wookimus.net> | a.k.a. ^chewie http://www.wookimus.net/ | s.k.a. gunnarr

These answers best reflect our current use of the syslog-ng daemon and standard BSD syslog. We operate in a heterogeneous networked environment with the majority of machines being Debian GNU/Linux 3.0. We have some SGI O2 machines and a couple SGI Challenges and one Solaris box. Pepper this variety with a few Mac OS 9.1 and 8.x boxes and a few Windows NT boxes, and you have our network -- fairly typical for an educational and postdoctorate research organization. -- Chad Walstrom <chewie@wookimus.net> | a.k.a. ^chewie http://www.wookimus.net/ | s.k.a. gunnarr

We plan to maintain a GPLd version of syslog-ng as well. In general the syslog-ng users' community will only benefit from a commercial branch, as we would assign more development time to syslog-ng, and some of the results would go into the GPL licensed version as well. -- Bazsi PGP info: KeyID 9AF8D0A9 Fingerprint CD27 CFB0 802C 0944 9CFD 804E C82C 8EB1

I know I'd order syslog-ng licenses and support the development. Good move Balazs. -- Real programmers don't bring brown-bag lunches. If the vending machine doesn't sell it, they don't eat it. Vending machines don't sell quiche.
