      I am using unix-dgram as the source (see config files in original post,
March 2nd). That's what's so weird about this...

No-one has any suggestions? This one has me scratching my 
head, surely it's something obvious I'm just not seeing...
use unix-dgram source or kill klogd and fetch kernel messages 
directly.
