Hey Patrick, I think I got it solved. It did definitely eat my head , my life , my complete sense ☺ … but I guess I was not doing it right. The version thing you mention did help. The init.d script pointer was also definitely helpful. Appreciate your help to the core, it was more of a motivation and definitely the guidance which helped me. Really appreciate this forum and your help a lot. Thanks & Regards, Chaitanya S From: Patrick H. But I would also advise taking care of all those warnings you get when starting it up. Many of them can be taking care of just by specifying the config as a version 3 config. Like for eg. I created a source file (tmp) and a destination file (tmpout). Added a dump entry abcd in tmp and executed syslog-ng as below command: /opt/syslog-ng/sbin/syslog-ng -f /opt/syslog-ng/etc/syslog-ng.conf -p /var/run/syslog-ng.pid & [1] 2028 [root@emsbayapm46] # Configuration file has no version number, assuming syslog-ng 2.1 format. The problem is now… when I have it running as a daemon, when I make entries in /tmp after this , the data is not written in tmpout. Can you please let me know what is missing and how can I run it as a daemon so all the time the entries are ready and diverted? You can download solaris software from sunfreeware.com (http://www.sunfreeware.com/programlistsparc10.html#syslogng) And no on the valid for a month thing. That would be a violation of the GPL. If the only reason youre not using the pre-compiled package is the lack of init script, then it'd be easier to get an init script than compile a new syslog-ng. If anything, you can just yank the init script from the source and use it with the pre-compiled version. If youre using solaris 10, then the proper way is to use the SMF manifests. A good source is http://hub.opensolaris.org/bin/view/Community+Group+smf/manifests and there's one for syslog-ng listed there. I have been trying to install syslog-ng open source on Solaris since quite sometime and now I am almost giving up. After installing I would have presumed to have /etc/init.d/syslog-ng file created but it wasn’t. Also now I am not able to do “make” to syslog-ng , observing the following error. Can anyone help me why this is happening? Is it related to PATH / PKG_CONFIG_PATH or something ?
