Hi Kavinda!

Thank you for your interest!
I recommend starting with compiling syslog-ng from source. [1]
After that, you could either work on a small feature request or on a bug report.

We can discuss that on gitter, where it is easier to support small discussions quickly. [2]
You can contact me directly too on gitter, if you need any help.

Regards,
Gábor

Hello,
I’m Kavinda Rajapakse, an undergraduate at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. Currently, I'm studying Computer Science and Engineering. This is my first time contributing to open source. I have some experience working in Rsyslog and Elastic stack. I would like to contribute to the "Support Elastic's beats protocol” project in GSOC 2022. I would be highly obliged if someone could provide me with an introduction as to how to get started.
Thank you.
