You are absolutely right, it *is* designed to scale horizontally.
*But* when you have a lot of open indices, *and* queries are not optimized
(e.g. if you still give users kibana 3) then you need a *lot* of nodes.
So my point was: it's not all that magical as you might think, and needs
quite a lot of babysitting from an ops point of view.
