Evan was fighting with an unrelated issue in bug #257 and in his valgrind output I did find hints to fix this bug as well.

I could find a way to reproduce and the patch below fixes the issue for me, so it probably will fix it for you. Can you please retest and confirm?

The problem affects both 3.4 and 3.5.
