I'd like to see something like this implemented too, as a similar problem exists in Debian too (.dpkg-* suffixes there, instead of .rpmnew).

I had a quick look at the code, and it doesn't seem to hard to turn the @include statement into something that accepts a shell glob. So distributions can add
@include "/etc/syslog-ng/conf.d/*.conf" to their config, and that'd do the right thing.
