Trying to compile 3.3.3 on Mac OS X 10.6.8/XCode 4.2, I get this:

libtool: link: /usr/bin/llvm-gcc -std=gnu99 -dynamiclib  -o .libs/libsyslog-ng-3.3.3.dylib [...]
ld: unknown option: --whole-archive
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

some cursory googling reveals that the Darwin linker does not accept "--whole-archive".

I'd be happy to help test a patch.
