Thanks, your May 4 patch to logreader.c appears to fix the problem 
on SunOS-5.8 and MacOsX-10.5.6, though I don't trust it enough yet to put into production.

The diff format was not recognized by my version of patch, not a big problem.

I can email you full strace privately.  It's too big (26 thousand lines)
for me to sanitize before posting in public.
