[syslog-ng]MySQL database backup and clean up

My syslog / mysql is working good, but I am not a DBA
and am wondering what kind of backup and maintence I
should be doing. After a few weeks it is getting
slower. I feel I need to keep the data but dont need
it have it in the database. Looking for good
recommendations
