I experience the same thing when running SuSE Linux 6.4 
(kernel 2.2.14, gcc 2.95.2)
I however didn't have any troubles on Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 
(kernel 2.2.10, gcc 2.91.66)

I haven't found any solution yet.
