Question about Packaged GPL Zorp Proxies
List, Does Zorp GPL come with an SMTP proxy? If no to above, does anyone know of any plug proxies that are compatible with Zorp to do SMTP proxying? If yes to above, can you please forward a name of such a product? - William Dennison -- William J Dennison Technical Director High Assurance Web Services Booz | Allen | Hamilton 900 Elkridge Landing Road, Suite 100 Linthicum, Maryland 21090 United States of America Email: dennison_william@bah.com Work: (410) 684-6523 Mobile: (410) 218-5866

no, a non-queuing SMTP proxy is included in Zorp Pro.

The GPLd Zorp includes a Plug proxy, you can use that for SMTP proxying, though the protocol will not be filtered. -- Bazsi PGP info: KeyID 9AF8D0A9 Fingerprint CD27 CFB0 802C 0944 9CFD 804E C82C 8EB1
Are there plans in the future to include an SMTP proxy? Also, is the GPL version of Zorp going to be widely supported as far as patches and security updates go? Or will the Pro version get more attention from the Zorp Corp., therefore be more robust? On Wed, 2004-05-12 at 09:31, Balazs Scheidler wrote:

Zorp-GPL contains proxies for Finger, Ftp, Http, Plug, SSL, Telnet and Whois protocols and the latest stable version is 2.1.7. The commercial version contains additional proxies for Imap, Ldap, Lp, Nntp, Pop3, Radius, Smtp, SQLNet and Tftp protocols. The latest version of Zorp Professional is 2.1.7 too. So we do not disregard the GPL-ed version. In addition Zorp Pro has the following additional features: Outbound authentication capability (S/Key, Ldap, Rb1CryptoCard, X.509 Cert, PAM), virus detection module (stackable into all proxies), and centralized management capability with graphical user interface (both for Linux and Windows) and finally there is a centralized monitoring system. As far as company strategy goes, BalaBit plans to release both the GPLd and the non GPLd version of Zorp in parallel. However it sometimes happens that there are gaps between the two versions, as development takes place in the commercial branch and we backport changes to the GPLd version from time to time. We are changing some of the development process to make this gap as small as possible (essentially using the same CVS branch and use external tools to separate the features). The SMTP proxy is one of the reasons why our customers choose the commercial offering. Therefore there are currently no plans to release it under the GPL. However this might change in the future. BalaBit always had a strong open source attitude, we release nearly all our developments under the GPL (syslog-ng, tproxy patches, Zorp GPL, all the utilities we include in ZorpOS). I think the current GPL version is enough to show the possibilities that Zorp provides which is sometimes more than other (even commercial) proxy based firewall products offer. -- Bazsi PGP info: KeyID 9AF8D0A9 Fingerprint CD27 CFB0 802C 0944 9CFD 804E C82C 8EB1
