Managed to work out the problem, removal of my compiled version of glib2 was incomplete and remants still existed in /usr/loca/lib etc.
 
have managed to compile and install eventlog/syslog-ng using the default glib2 version supplied with redhat.

Hmm.. those references should be resolved from glib, can you post your
configure output and link parameters? What glib version are you using?
