thanks, that does work and you're right, it is less intrusive so I've changed my script to do that instead...

Ok then, I've got syslog-ng 1.6.9. I guess it will be worth the
upgrade to 2.0 at some point when it becomes very solid. 

In the meantime I wrote a quick script to test the programs are alive
and restart syslog-ng if one of them dies, which is good enough and
gets the job done so I'm ok with that for now.
    

A reload should be fine too, and is less intrusive.
