I think it was introduced around 3.4.

You could perhaps do some kind of preprocessing in the config (cpp, sed or m4) with a script if you'd like it in 3.2.

Thanks for your reply, but we are constrained to version 3.2 for now (has to be in the RHEL EPEL).  I did not see this feature discussed in the 3.2 admin guide.  Is it an undocumented feature of version 3.2, or did support for system environment variables come in a later version?
