<div>In most cases, `apt-get upgrade` does the trick.</div>

<div>In case you previously had a really old syslog-ng version, it is worth using a test environment for the upgrade.</div>
<div>Once the upgrade is done, you can start syslog-ng in the foreground to check incompatible changes based on your syslog-ng configuration version:</div>
<div>$ syslog-ng -Fe</div>

<div class="elementToProof">> WARNING: Configuration file format is too old, syslog-ng is running in compatibility mode. Please update it to use the syslog-ng 3.38 format at your time of convenience.</div>
<div class="elementToProof">> To upgrade the configuration, please review the warnings about incompatible changes printed by syslog-ng, and once completed change the @version header at the top of the configuration file;</div>

<div>Every additional warning message listed after the above needs to be addressed.</div>
<div class="elementToProof">Those messages explain what needs to be done to remain functionally compatible.</div>
<div class="elementToProof">They can be confusing sometimes, but you can share those with us and we will help resolve them.</div>

<div>Once you are done, you can just replace @version: 3.XY at the top of the config file with @version: 3.38, and the above warning will disappear too.</div>
